Four Memory Exercises to Improve Your Child’s Memory

Having a great memory is important for both kids and grown-ups as it makes learning and memorizing things a lot easier. But, just like any other skill, a child is not born with a strong memory. Instead, it can be acquired by different means and practices. So, when it comes to the sharper memory of your child, there are several memory exercises that you should help your child to practice regularly.

Kaintal Senior, one of the best ICSE schools in Patiala, recommends some tips to help your children enrich their experiences and build essential life skills to perform better in their personal and professional lives.

4 Memory Exercises that You Can Try with Your Child:

  1. Meditation: Meditation works great for all. Teaching your child to meditate from a very early age is an excellent way to boost his/her memory. It is an effective way to instil good habits in your child and also keep him/her calm and focused. Though practising meditation with a younger kid is a challenging task, still you can start with just 2-5 minutes and then increase the timing accordingly.
  2. Exercising: Mental health largely depends upon the well-being of the body. Simply put, being physically fit and active helps the brain to stay sharp and healthy. This is the reason why you should develop the habit of exercising with your child from an earlier age and make it a part of their everyday schedule.
  3. Colours: Using colours while teaching your child is an excellent way to ensure that the information will stay in the brain of your child for a longer time. Tactful uses of colours are such an effective element that the brain filters very easily among the billions of pieces of sensory information. So, what you can do is highlight some important passages with different colours or use colourful notes in the textbooks. It can help your child memorize specific information without much hassle.
  4. Nutrition: Good diet is essential for the well functioning of both the body and the brain. Without proper nutrition, it will be hard for your child to achieve good health and memory. Experts suggest giving a wholesome diet to children. Foods that contain omega-3, antioxidants, and flavonoids are highly recommended to include in your child's diet to promote brain health.

  • Highlight the Difficult Words: The majority of children face difficulties with specific words. For example, your child may find it challenging to spell words like a weird, thief, and achieve, or with some double-letter words like accommodation, address, occasion, etc. In such a case what you can do is highlight these words and encourage them to pay attention to them while reading.

  • Break Words: This is the most effective and easiest way to teach spelling to children. When you will break a complex word into a simpler part, your child will automatically spell it. So, it is recommended to separate the words by syllables to make children understand how to spell the letters of each syllable and finally bring them together to form a word. Suppose you are facing difficulties to teach your child spell work like Television or Cycle. So, what you can do is break up the work into te/le/vi/sion and cy/cle. Thus, you can help your child to learn the proper way to spell words.

  • Practice: When it comes to teaching your child to spell words, make sure you regularly encourage your child to practice them and make it a habit. What you can do is to write down work in their notebook and then draw three sections beside it for your child to write the same word. Thus you can make your child remember difficult words.

  • Teach Your Child How to Deal with Distractions: A short break is an effective way to make children refocus on their studies. But when it comes to classroom distraction, there is no option to take a short break. Tell your child to close their eyes and take a few deep breaths when they face trouble focusing in the classroom.
  • Tell Your Child to Sit Farther Away from Distractions: It is important to find out the main reasons for your child's distractions in the classroom. Ask your child what makes them more distracted whether it is because of his/her chatty friend, or simply sitting beside a window or something else. Once you find out the reason, make a plan for your child to overcome them.
  • Talk to the Teachers: It is important to meet the teachers and ask them about your child’s activities in the classroom. Only the teachers can help you give the exact information about it. You can also consult with the teachers regarding the solution.
